Discover the rich heritage and journey of Benue State College of Nursing Sciences Makurdi from its inception to becoming a premier nursing education institution.
Explore Our TimelineFollowing the creation of Benue State out of the then Benue Plateau and Kwara states, Makurdi was designated as the state capital. This administrative change created the need for establishing healthcare training institutions to serve the growing population.
The establishment of the School of Midwifery was identified as a priority to address the healthcare needs of the new state.
The School of Nursing was established as a result of staff deployment following the creation of the new state and to provide essential manpower for the growing healthcare needs of the people.
The school was founded by the then Military Governor Col. Abdullahi Shellenge (rtd) under the leadership of Mr. J.I Adamu, marking a significant milestone in healthcare education in Benue State.
Over the decades, both the School of Nursing and School of Midwifery grew significantly, producing thousands of qualified nurses and midwives who served across Nigeria and beyond.
The institutions maintained high academic standards and adapted to evolving healthcare education requirements, earning recognition for excellence in nursing education.
In a landmark development, both the Nursing and Midwifery schools were upgraded to the status of College of Nursing Sciences, reflecting their expanded scope, improved facilities, and enhanced academic offerings.
This elevation marked a new chapter in the institution's history, positioning it as a comprehensive center for nursing education excellence.
As the Military Governor of Benue State, Col. Shellenge played a pivotal role in establishing the School of Nursing in 1977. His vision for healthcare development in the newly created state laid the foundation for nursing education excellence.
As the first administrator of the School of Nursing, Mr. Adamu provided the leadership needed to establish the institution's academic framework, recruit qualified faculty, and develop the curriculum that would shape generations of nursing professionals.
The college is strategically located in the heart of Makurdi city, the capital of Benue State. Our campus is bounded by The Benue State Environmental Sanitation Agency (BENSESA) and The Bureau of Local Government and Chieftaincy affairs.
We are situated in close proximity to important government institutions including the Nigerian Police Headquarters, The Nigeria Railway Corporation, and behind the Ministry of Justice Headquarters, creating a secure and accessible environment for our students.
